Bottled Water Study: No Different from Tap Water

By Phyllis Wheeler

An October, 2008, analysis of bottled water showed many chemical contaminants in each brand analyzed at levels no different from those in tap water.

The Environmental Working Group of Washington, DC, purchased 10 bottled water brands in nine states and the District of Columbia. A lab found traces of 38 pollutants, averaging eight pollutants per brand. In addition, four of the brands showed bacterial contamination (http://www.ewg.org/reports/bottledwater).

EWG found that two of the brands were the same, chemically, as tap water. These are Walmart's and Giant's store brands, which contained byproducts of chlorine disinfection. In addition, Giant's brand held traces of fluoride. The amount of chlorine byproducts was too high for standards set by the state of California and bottled water producers.

The lab at the University of Iowa found pollutants ranging from caffeine and Tylenol to arsenic, radioactive isotopes, ammonia and nitrate (fertilizer residues), and solvents, propellants, plasticizers, and others.

The researchers conducted an additional test, intended to measure estrogen-mimicking, carcinogenic chmicals found in plastic bottles typically used for bottled water. Breast-cancer cells in a lab dish were given water samples from the study and compared to a control. One brand spurred a 78 percent increase in the breast cancer cells, as compared to the control.

Bottled water isn't necessarily any safer than water from the tap. The laws governing it are based on tap water standards, after all. The EPA's tap water standards form the basis for the FDA's bottled water standards, the EPA points out (www.epa.gov/ogwdw/faq/faq.html). But that's not the perception by many Americans, who are drinking 9 billion gallons of bottled water per year, spending an average of $3.79 per gallon for it.

You can make a wise decision by spending just 8 cents per gallon on a home water filter, which you can install at your kitchen sink. It can provide you with clean pure water, which you can put in safe containers of your choice.

Manage Your Diabetic Diet

By Linda Barbara

For a diabetic a diabetic diet is very important to managing their condition, and in some cases even working towards reversing it. If you're a diabetic then it's wise to cut the amount of fats and carbohydrates you consume.

Both types of diabetes can benefit from the diabetic diet. Type I, called juvenile diabetes, is often diagnosed in children while type II usually starts in adulthood and is more common. Type I diabetics suffer because their bodies don't produce insulin, while Type II diabetics suffer because their cells don't absorb insulin. It is type II diabetes that can be reduced by a diabetic diet, although type I also responds well to the diet.

In general the diabetic diet is geared towards attaining ideal body weight for controlling and managing diabetes. There is a simple formula for calculating the estimated ideal bodyweight for any person. In women add five pounds to 100 for every inch above five feet, and subtract five pounds from 100 for every inch under five feet. For example a 5'2" woman would ideally weigh 110 pounds. Men add 6 pounds to 106 for every inch over 5 feet tall. A 5'11" man would ideally weigh 172 pounds.

Many people have different opinions on the perfect diabetic diet, however some general elements are in common. For type I diabetics, the ideal diet includes about 16 calories per pound. As an example, someone who weighs 170 pounds would eat 2720 calories daily. Type II diabetics eat about 1500 calories per day to lose weight, then differing amounts of calories to maintain ideal weight.

In a general a diabetic diet carbohydrate intake should be about 50% of the daily caloric intake. Some argue that less carbohydrates are better, but there are advantages to cutting down the fat. Sometimes this can be offset by substituting mono unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats in the place of saturated fats.

Eat right, keep moving. Pregnancy Diet

By Ben Hartsuff

Eat right, keep moving. Pregnancy Diet

You just have read all that you need to know about how to prevent being overweight. That simple set of instructions should be easy to follow, but not for 35% of Americans who are unable to prevent being overweight.

Of course, once we are overweight, we usually want to trim down for a whole lot of reasons, some related to health, others having to do with looks.

In addition, it is never too late to lose weight. But the fact is, it is a whole lot easier to prevent putting on pounds than to try losing them later on. And if there is one thing we all know, it is that weight gain is likely to happen if we do not take forward-looking steps to stop it.

Health experts say that most people who are into losing weight usually stray. They tend to go back to their old eating habits even after they learn to enjoy low-fat eating. They tend to return to sedentary ways even though they enjoy exercising.

But despite the momentum toward weight gain, you can stop it from happening, experts say. And there are plenty of good reasons to avoid excess pounds, reasons that go beyond vanity or social acceptance.

In fact, some health experts contend that the significance of excess weight is more than cosmetic. They say that it takes a huge toll on people's physical health.

The Way to Losing WeightNaturally

The nuts and bolts of eating right maintaining a healthy weight is not all that complicated. In fact, it is a good bet that most people know pretty well what is best. Hence, losing weight the natural way should not be a problem at all.

Consequently, a reasonable approach for losing weight naturally is to stick to a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates, high in fiber, moderate in protein, and low in fat.

A complex carbohydrate is a baked potato. Fat is the sour cream and butter you should not put on it. Fiber is vegetables. Fat is the oil you should not fry them in. Protein is a lean cut of meat. Fat is the gravy you should not pour over it.

Moreover, health experts say that dietary fat promotes weight gain because it is a very dense source of calories. Also, when you consume excess calories from dietary fat, you store those calories as body fat more efficiently than excess calories from other sources.

On the other hand, it can also help you lose weight naturally if you will not fall into the so-called "fat-free" trap. Manufacturers keep coming out with low-fat or fat-free versions of their best-selling foods, but Americans keep getting fatter anyway.

One of the greatest delusions of the 1990s is that "no fat" means "non-fattening." The truth is, you are often getting just as many calories from the no-fat version, even if the calories are not coming from fat.

The term fat-free can be a trap if you start to believe that you can eat any amount of the foods that are advertised that way.

What's more, it is best to respond to hunger with healthful snacks. Health experts say it would be better to try eating every three to four hours or 6 small meals per day, which may mean a nutritious low-fat snack between lunch and dinner.

When you feel the urge for food coming on, snacking on something healthy such as a slice of whole-grain toasted bread is a better alternative. Never skip a meal and eat snacks instead because that is the worst thing you can do if you are trying to control your eating habits and weight. Especially when pregnant.

Remember, if you want to lose weight naturally, you have to keep track of every food you eat and of every activity that you do. When you say natural weight loss means that you do not have to use some accessories or helpful aids just to lose weight.

Losing weight naturally is a process and not a fad. Hence, it would take a lot of dogged determination, self-control, and discipline just to achieve your ideal weight.

How to avoid Acidosis

By Yousef Singh-Chang

It is a constant struggle to keep our bodies alkaline and acid levels balanced. Many doctors believe that a body being to acidic can lead to diseases and illness. This is proven with research that has been done by Dr. Marcial-Vega. Dr. Marcial Vega has been doing a 3 year study on Goji and how it can balance the bodies alkaline levels. I want to go over some interesting facts from the study and share them with you.

Dr. Marcial-Vega believes that keeping an even balance in your alkaline levels is the key to good health. He started 86 patients on a Goji regimen under close medical supervision, including weekly blood testing. Each patient was given a dosage between 1 and 15 ounces depending on how acidic their bodies where and how many toxins have been built up. He noticed that as the alkalinity level changed, so did the reversal of illnesses including cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic renal failure, obesity, high cholesterol, arthritis, and more. He also found that 90% of his patients reversed their acidity by just taking Goji.

The next step Dr. Marcial-Vega took was to see if the Goji made any difference in their illness, including patients undergoing cancer treatment, chemotherapy or radiation. Many of these patients had elevations toward normal blood levels during therapy, he says. So this indicated a marked protection of the bone marrow during cancer therapy.

During this study Dr. Marcial-Vega observed many things. High cholesterol levels decreased a minimum of 50 points in only 4 weeks in 67% of the patients. Another great observation he made was that high blood pressure dropped in 80% of the patients. The next observation is the best by far. He noticed that 85% of his obese patients lost a good amount of weight during the Goji regimen. These results conclude that Goji definitely makes a difference in overall health.

I am so glad Dr. Marcial-Vega took the time to do this study. It shows how amazing Goji berries are, and that if you eat right and keep your body balanced you can prevent disease and illness. Dr. Marcial-Vega concluded that everyone should use Goji in their daily lives. It can prevent you from getting sick, and give you a energy boost.

Sleep Hygiene: Natural Therapy for a Better Nights Sleep

By Rose K Taylor

Sleep hygiene therapy is a natural, no side effects technique that follows a compilation of practices to help relax your body before bedtime, naturally inducing sleep.

Although it has not been concluded that this therapy guarantees a good night's sleep for everyone, the techniques are something anyone who has trouble sleeping should be aware of. Over time, these instructions will turn into habits, and the mind and body will recognize and respond to them appropriately.

One thing that sleep therapy accomplishes is teaching those with sleep disorders how to quiet their minds and thus their bodies. The therapy involves repeating a series of actions to help you get ready for bed each night. The techniques will ideally lead to a night of restful sleep and a refreshing morning after.

The thought behind this therapy is by training your body to become quiet and relaxed, you will be able to fall asleep with better ease and get a full night's rest. It may take time for your body to respond to these methods, but keep trying the therapy to see how your body takes to it.

Before beginning sleep therapy get all the information. Suggestions to increase the chances that the techniques will work include limiting environmental factors that contribute to insomnia. Eliminate extraneous noise and light that can make it hard to fall asleep. Also, try to establish a nightly routine where you go to bed at or around the same time.

To help you get ready for sleep hygiene therapy, exercise is recommended. While exercise benefits your health it also brings on exhaustion. Exposure to natural sunlight encourages your body to sleep better. Other ideas to help you relax such as stretching to relax the muscles or taking a warm bath around bedtime will help you get in the mood to sleep.

Stimulating activities in the evening are not going to make you want to sleep. In fact, you could be up for hours if you do them. Exercising, reading, or watching your favorite television show can easily put you past your bedtime and contribute to lack of sleep that night. Avoid these things when engaging in sleep therapy.

Stimulating drinks can hinder your sleep for the night. Avoid drinking sodas and hot drinks loaded with caffeine or having an alcoholic beverage before bed. Added to this, telling yourself that you must sleep, usually results in not sleeping at all.

Through sleep hygiene therapy, you can establish a routine that helps you get to sleep better. Sleep deprivation can contribute to serious health issues and will affect your ability to complete responsibilities. Medicinal sleep aids can also have serious side effects and even prolong your insomnia.
